Hi, my name is Daniel Bannigan. In April of 2018, I graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering. During my time in college, most of my work experience was in or related to the manufacturing industry. I was introduced to the industry at my job at the University of Michigan Tauber Institute Operations Leadership Factory. Here we taught engineers, managers, quality personnel, and operators the pillars of lean manufacturing in a 50/50 classroom and mock production floor setting. I instantly felt very comfortable with these concepts that I was learning here and was quite fascinated. That job helped me get my first real taste of the industry at Bosal where we manufactured exhaust systems for GM and FCA. Production processes we used there include pipe processing (bending, cutting, pressing, endforming, and notching), drilling, ridgelocking, seamlocking, MIG, TIG, and resistance welding. I love working on the production floor, working with machines, and figuring out how I can improve production methods to save money. I thrive off of being challenged and finding solutions to complicated problems.
Post graduation life finds me working with Burke E. Porter Machinery Company in Grand Rapids, MI. We build automated testing equipment predominately for the automotive industry. Burke E. Porter is a part of a family of companies, the Burke Porter Group. I will be working with all of the companies in the group and will therefore be exposed to a wide variety of machines. This is a link to the Burke Porter Group’s website. My role is centered around hands-on controls engineering work, primarily the in-house startup of new machines. I took this job to take a deep dive into learning about controls and automation. All manufacturing facilities heavily rely on controls for their everyday processes, and from my experience, this area can cause a lot of headaches. If I am going to work with automated machines whether it be troubleshooting or making improvements on the floor, designing new equipment, or purchasing new equipment, I believe that having knowledge of controls system architecture will be extremely valuable.
